South Carolina requires a Mechanical Contractor license with Electrical subclassification before any bidding or electrical work can take place. All applicants must pass the Business Management & Law exam in addition to one of the Electrician exams offered in South Carolina.

Applicants can elect to sit for either the South Carolina Electrical Contractor Exam or the NASCLA Accredited Exam, both offered by PSI. The board divides Electrical Contractor licenses into 5 groups. Each group denotes the financial limits and requirements of the licensee.

    The Electrical subclassification allows South Carolina Mechanical Contractors perform electrical work including, but not limited to, installations and repairs on systems up to 600 volts, indoor and outdoor lighting and required equipment, as well as window and through-the-wall air conditioning units under 3 tons/3 HP which require no piping. Each license Group has financial limits per bid and job, as follows:

South Carolina Electrical Contractor RequirementsExperience

  • Submit 2 years of full-time, hands-on field work within the past 5 years. Only commercial work is accepted.

The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, South Carolina has reciprocity agreements Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah.
